The word plasma refers to ionized, energized gas- in this case Helium gas. A radio frequency electrode is used to energize a stream of helium creating a stream of plasma that is used to treat the skin.

The helium plasma stream created by the J-Plasma device creates a beam of heated helium that is extraordinarily precise. Because Helium only has 2 electrons, the excited state of this gas occurs at a much lower temperature than other resurfacing treatments. This prevents damage to tissue deeper or adjacent to the treated area, and allows for a full effect to be seen at precisely the desired tissue. The heat from the plasma beam vaporizes only the outermost skin layer (epidermis) during the first pass, while the precise energy of the further passes invigorate the optimal cells to create a new layer of optimized skin. Sun damage and normal wrinkles require 2 passes during the single treatment to create an incredible improvement. Further passes may be required (again, during the single treatment) in order to produce the desired effects.

No other treatment has the ability to reverse signs of aging and sun damage that Cool Helium plasma does. Not only are pigmentation changes and skin irregularities improved, but fine lines are removed and deep wrinkles often disappear as well. Better yet, the Cool Plasma stream actually causes contraction of lax skin, allowing facial shaping and toning in a previously unseen way. This treatment creates a completely new visage with improvement of skin tone, skin pigment, skin wrinkles, and skin laxity.

Most patients require a single treatment with multiple “passes” of the Helium Plasma stream.

Cool Plasma is best utilized in men and women of relatively fair skin, referred to as Fitzpatrick skin types of 1, 2, and 3. This refers to patients who are not of dark complexion such as dark Latino and African American patients

The perioral region, or area around the mouth, is one of the areas that benefits the most from J Plasma. It almost erases the smoker’s lines or the fine lives around the lips. Additionally, because of the ability of J Plasma to cause tissue contraction, lips that thin with age can be brought back to a more youthful, aesthetic shape by actually lifting the lip margin and shortening the lip length between the nose and the upper lip- without surgery!

The peri-occular region, or area around the eyes, is an area that J-Plasma’s unique skin tightening properties are best seen. In many cases, bulges around the eyes previously corrected only with surgery can now be made youthful appearing with a single J-Plasma treatment. This is in addition to rejuvenating the sun damage around the eyes and virtually eliminating the crow’s feet wrinkles… without surgery.

After a treatment you will experience significant swelling of the treated areas. Your skin will be treated with ointment for several days as the healing progresses. It is critical to avoid the sun in the weeks following your J-Plasma procedure, and healing takes a few weeks of local care. At about 3to 4 weeks, most patients are back in action with makeup, though some pinkness can remain for up to 3 months.
