Bellafill Before and After Pictures

Bellafill for acne scars

Bellafill is the only filler that is FDA approved for the correction of acne scars. It is a safe, simple, treatment done in the office that offers both immediate and long lasting results. Bellafill is injected under the scars with or without subcision of the scar (to release the scar tissue and create space for the filler).

Not all types of acne scars can be improved with Bellafill. Acne scars are typically divided into 3 types: ice pick, boxcar, and rolling scars. Ice pick and boxcar scars are deeper than they are wide, with sharp edges and these scars do not respond and correct well with Bellafill. However, rolling scars which are wider than they are deep, with gentle curves at the edges, are excellent scars for Bellafill. Other types of depressed scars, not just acne scars, can often be improved with Bellafill as well.

Bellafill’s FAQ

How many syringes of Bellafill do you need?

Typically most people will need 1-2 kits of Bellafill. There are 5 syringes in a kit. The number of syringes you need depends on how deep the wrinkles and folds are and the extent of volume loss on the face. You and Dr. Atluri can decide at your initial consultation how many syringes/kits you will need to get the best results.

Where can you use Bellafill?

Bellafill is FDA approved for

  • Filling/lifting deep and superficial smile lines
  • Atrophic acne scars

Off label – Bellafill can be used for filling

  • Temple hollows
  • Midface volume loss
  • Smoker’s lines around the mouth
  • Creases in corners of mouth
  • Jaw line definition
  • Jowls
  • Eyebrow lift
  • Tear troughs

Is Bellafill safe?

The 5 year safety data released by FDA:

  • Bellafill has the largest and longest dermal filler study ever conducted.
  • Bellafill had 1008 subjects enrolled across 23 sites in the US.
  • The study had unprecedented 87% retention at 5 years
  • Bellafill had an exceedingly high 5 year satisfaction/success rating of over 90% for subjects and investigators
  • Bellafill had a complication rate 1.7% of mostly lumps and bumps. All Bellafill lumps and bumps resolved or significantly improved with standard treatment (low dose steroid or Kenalog injection)

How is Bellafill different from other facial fillers?

Dermal fillers are of two types

Hyaluronic Acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already found in your skin. It helps keep skin plump and hydrated. HA fillers are typically soft and gel-like. They vary in their thickness and viscosity. The popular ones are Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Restylane, SILK, Restylane LYFT and Perlane. They last from 6 months to 2 years. They give immediate results and are reversible. Hyaluronic acid fillers are good for fine lines and facial folds and temporary facial lift.

Non Hyaluronic Acid fillers

The top 3 non hyaluronic acid fillers are Bellafill, Sculptra and Radiesse. Bellafill and Sculptra are good for facial re-volumization and deep wrinkles and folds.

How long does it take to inject Bellafill?

Bellafill typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes. You can return to your normal daily routine right away. Dr. Atluri uses a micro-cannula technique while injecting Bellafill, so bruising is less likely than when a needle is used.

What is microcannula technique?

When injecting Bellafill, a sharp needle is replaced with a blunt tipped thin microcannula.

With its flexibility and its blunt tip, the microcannula technique offers many advantages over traditional sharp needles which include:

  • The microcannula is more maneuverable due to its flexibility
  • Procedures can be completed quicker and with less pain due to the flexible design
  • Damage to small blood vessels during the procedure are virtually non-existent
  • Little to no bruising is caused since there is no damage to the blood vessels.

What kind of downtime should I plan for?

You can return to normal activities right away. As with any injectable dermal filler, swelling, redness and bruising can occur at the treatment site.  Redness, if it occurs, will generally subside after 24 hours.  Swelling can last a few days and under the eyes it can last a few weeks.  Bruising, if it occurs, can last up to 2 weeks.

When will I see results?

You will see results immediately.   Dr. Atluri will show you exactly what result she is achieving for you as she treats you.  The results look better in 6 months and continues to improve up to a year.

Are there any possible side effects with Bellafill?

As with all injectable wrinkle fillers, you can expect swelling and bruising in the treatment area. Swelling usually goes away completely after 10 days but if you had Bellafill under your eyes it, in rare cases, can last up to 3 months. Sometimes there is bruising that typically disappears in seven days but can last 3 weeks before it is completely gone. If you have bruising after a Bellafill treatment it is fine to use any cover up makeup. It is very common to have some slight redness and increased sensitivity at some or all injection sites. Two rare side effects of all dermal fillers may be lumps and granulomas. With Bellafill, true granulomas are extremely rare. Usually what are seen are lumps. These lumps almost always go away by 3 months and you are very rarely able to see them. If they can be seen, then Dr. Atluri can treat these to make them go away.

Why Choose Dr Atluri for your Bellafill treatment?

Dr Atluri will sit down with you to plan and personalize a treatment. You can discuss the number of syringes of Bellafill and kits you will need, and the number of treatment sessions you need. Dr Atluri has been injecting dermal fillers for the past 10 years. She has good experience injecting Bellafill. Using microcannula technique, she can give you good, natural results with minimal downtime
